Department of Geology
Bachelor of Science in Geology (B. Sc. Geology) is an undergraduate program offered by Tribhuvan University (TU) under the management of Institute of Science and Technology (IoST). It is a four-year annual degree program total that includes theory, laboratory practical, field work and report writing. The duration of this degree program was changed from 3 years to 4 years from the year 2069 B.S. to provide international standard of education to students at reasonable price in Nepal.
This undergraduate bachelor degree program deals with the study of physical and chemical nature, structure and geological process of earth with comprehensive understanding of earth surface processes, earth materials, tectonics, rock forming processes and paleontology including petrology, engineering geology, structural geology, hydrogeology and climate change. Geology is the science that comprises the study of solid earth and the process by which it is shaped and changed. Geology provides primary evidence for plate tectonics, the history of life and evolution, and past climates. In modern times, geology is commercially important for mineral and hydrocarbon exploration and for evaluating water resources; is publicly important for the prediction and understanding of natural hazards, the remediation of environment problems, and for providing insights into past climate change; plays an essential role in geotechnical engineering; and is a major academic discipline.
In Central Campus of Technology, geology, as a stream, was introduced in 2070 B.S. under the management of the Department of Physics. Later on, Department of Geology, as a separate department, was established on 2075 B.S. The total intake capacity is 50 students (25 from subject combinations with Physics and Mathematics and 25 from with subject combinations with Botany and Zoology). It consists of four academic years carrying total of 2000 marks including Field work.
Objectives
- To prepare students to pursue higher studies like Master’s level program in Geology or relatable fields.
- To empower, encourage and develop skilled, intellectual and passionate geologist to work as researcher in geological laboratories, companies and industries for the study related to earth, evolution, landform and related subjects.
- To prepare successful graduates who can apply their techniques and knowledge within the field of geology for the solution of applied research or geological problems.
- To prepare students for practical workforce as geochemists, geoscientist, meteorologist and prepare them to work professionally and successfully.
- To provide skill and ability to the students to recognize, formulate and interpret the scientific methodology and critical thinking skills in geology and related field
Eligibility
Any candidates who have completed 10+ 2 or equivalent securing minimum 'C' grade in all subjects of Grade 11 and 12 are eligible for admission in Bachelor of Science (B.Sc) in Biology program of Tribhuvan University.
Admission criteria
A student who seeks admission to B.Sc. program:
- Must appear in an entrance examination of two hours duration conducted by Central Campus of Technology, Institute of Science and Technology (IOST), TU.
- Candidates securing at least 50% marks in the entrance examination are eligible to admit in the program.
- The selection of the students for admission will be based as per the merit of the entrance examination.
- Candidate must comply with all the application procedures.
